It’s all about striking the right balance among these three crucial elements.

People

Among the three “P’s,” “People” take the top spot in importance. Even the best processes and products can get you far without the right people.

But, having the right individuals in your team is crucial, as the wrong ones can harm a business. It’s important to note that what’s considered the “right” fit for one business might not be the same for another.

It’s not just about looking at someone’s resume or academic records; true effectiveness often becomes apparent during in-person interviews when you see how they interact.

Example: During Steve Jobs’ time at Apple and Elon Musk’s leadership at Tesla, both companies had distinct approaches to decision-making and organisational structure.

At Apple under Steve Jobs, things were notably different. The company was renowned for its unconventional management style, so it didn’t have a traditional organisational chart. What truly mattered within the company was your proximity to Steve Jobs and how he perceived your contributions, which could change at any moment.

Steve and those in his inner circle held the authority to make critical decisions, while everyone else essentially followed their lead or chose to depart from the company.

Process

The second key element for success is how well a business develops and executes its operational processes carefully, assuming the right people are on board. Having well-thought-out and logical processes is vital.

These processes should avoid unnecessary complexity. For instance, although the end product is a book in the publishing industry, the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes involved in transforming ideas into drafts, manuscripts, and final copies significantly impact the business.

In most industries, processes must evolve with the changing times; otherwise, a business risks falling behind its competitors in a casual or haphazard manner.

Example: Amazon’s approach is to “have a backbone, disagree and commit.” This implies that employees are encouraged to stand their ground and express their objections if they believe a decision is incorrect.

However, it also implies that if someone cannot adhere to this process, they might not be a good fit for the company.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), despite Jeff Bezos’ initial reputation for making quick and unpredictable decisions, is fundamentally a process-oriented company.

Over time, Bezos recognised the importance of having mechanisms or processes to ensure consistency and effectiveness, regardless of the individuals involved.

Product

A company’s product is often tangible, like a tool, software package, clothing item, or food product. However, sometimes the product is a service, such as tax accounting, legal counsel, or cleaning services.

While a great product is not the sole determinant of business success, it is essential because customers won’t buy irrelevant or subpar products (or services).

When you combine exceptional product strategies with effective processes, people and well-designed processes for delivering those products or services, and the proper market customer feedback, along with customer trends and a commitment to customer satisfaction, a great product line can turn a struggling business into a thriving one, this synergy leads businesses to success in the business world.

Example: Take Apple under Steve Jobs as a prime example. Steve had a somewhat unconventional approach regarding his customers’ opinions.

He often expressed a rather strong disregard for his current customers” thoughts, believing in a philosophy like “I’ll create what I believe is right, and my customers will eventually come to appreciate it.” This is an extreme form of prioritising the finished product above all else, where design takes precedence over functionality.

However, it’s important to note that not every company should adopt this extreme stance. Most of us aren’t Steve Jobs, and even Apple, in its current form, can’t quite follow that approach anymore.

However, many companies have achieved remarkable success by staying ahead of their customers’ needs and actively shaping them rather than simply reacting.

The Synergy of People Process Product Principle

Achieving success isn’t about focusing solely on one aspect of individual and team performance but rather harmonizing the forces of three components of People, Process, and Product, often referred to as the PPP Principle. Organizations and businesses can achieve remarkable results when these three elements combine effectively.

People + Process = Bureaucracy (Low Achievement, High Adaptability)

When an organization prioritizes its people and processes without paying attention to its product or service, it can often lead to a state resembling bureaucracy.

While such an environment might have high adaptability and flexibility, it often lacks a clear results-oriented focus and accountability. This can result in a situation where a company is highly efficient in its operations but struggles to deliver meaningful outcomes.

Process + Product = Robotic Fulfillment (Low Motivation, Low Innovation)

In cases where processes and products take precedence, it can lead to a mechanical and uninspiring work environment. While processes are essential for consistency and efficiency, when coupled with a product-focused approach, it can sometimes lead to a lack of motivation among employees.

Without the creative spark of innovation, organisations may find themselves merely robotically fulfilling tasks, missing out on the potential for growth and improvement.

Product + People = Uncertainty (Chaos, Lack of Innovation)

When a company places its product or service at the forefront without balancing the needs of its people, it can create an environment of uncertainty.

This may lead to chaos and employee downtime, as there might not be well-defined processes or systems in place to support the workforce. Additionally, innovation can take a back seat without focusing on nurturing talent and fostering a more positive work environment and culture front-line employees, hindering the company’s long-term sustainability.

People + Product + Process = Stand-Out Business Success!

The true magic in organisational success happens when all three essential elements – People, Product, and Process – operate in perfect harmony.

A remarkable blend of innovation, adaptability, and motivation within such enterprises becomes the driving force. In these companies, employees are seen as resources and indispensable contributors to the company’s triumph. Their skills and dedication propel the organisation toward success.

Alongside this, well-structured processes provide the foundation for efficiency and consistency in daily operations, ensuring that tasks are executed precisely. The result, whether a product or service, consistently maintains high standards, staying relevant and exceeding customer expectations.

This holistic approach also fosters a balanced focus on achieving goals with unwavering accountability for results. Employees are not merely motivated; they are inspired to excel. Moreover, the organisation exhibits agility, swiftly adapting to the ever-changing market dynamics while steadfastly delivering exceptional products or services.

Online project time tracking by TimeTrack optimises allocating valuable human resources, ensuring that skills and time are utilised effectively. Your organisation follows a strict, well-established sales process. You have a talented but relatively inexperienced sales team.

In this scenario, the key to success is selecting the right people for the job. Given the rigid Process, you need individuals with a deep understanding of your product or service and proven sales representatives’ expertise.

Attempting this with a less experienced team could be challenging unless you can negotiate more flexibility in your Process or additional training resources.

Example 2: Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Your mission is to implement a CRM system for your organisation to manage customer interactions better. You have a team of developers skilled in database management and software development but with limited experience with CRM systems.

The Process you choose becomes pivotal. Your team needs training, and there are inherent risks.

Opt for a process and framework that allows for incremental learning and development and secures extra time and budget for training. Consider bringing in experts to assist with the initial setup and customisation.

Example 3: Product Development

In this scenario, you can assemble your team and choose the product development process for a new offering. One option is to hire a specialised product development firm with a track record in your industry.

They bring both product expertise and a refined development process. Alternatively, you could build the product, reinforce an in-house team, recruit fresh talent and provide the necessary training. This approach creates a new, strong product line, opening up and enhancing licensing opportunities while your businesses develop internal capabilities for future projects.

Example 4: Product Selection

Your management wants you to select a new product to add to your company’s portfolio. You have a diverse team with various skill sets, and you can adopt different product development processes.

The choice should be guided by profitability, considering the potential risks and costs of failure. Evaluate your team’s expertise and look for a product that aligns with their skills.

Determine if people have opportunities for new skills within your team and if existing processes can support them in developing a product outside their usual domain. Assess your team and budget for potential consultants and training and the time required for skill development.

In each scenario, the synergy of people, processes, and products is pivotal in achieving success. Making informed decisions based on the project’s context can produce positive outcomes and contribute to your organisation’s long-term growth and success.

Start Thriving with the Power of People, Process, and Product!

Get started

Final Thoughts

It all comes down to a simple but powerful trio for businesses to succeed: People, Process, and Product. Efficient processes pave the way for the success of these products and, in turn, drive business growth, enabling you to take up-selling opportunities and other new markets and business opportunities and bring in even more talented individuals.

Remember to keep the 3 P’s at the forefront of your mind, not just as a strategic framework but as a constant yardstick for ongoing improvement.
